7 Tips To Fight Bugs

Published on Jul 31, 2013
It’s the dead of summer, which has a variety of implications for almost all of the United States. Most of  these implications are positive- kids are on summer break, everyone seems to be a little more relaxed, and the weather leads to the beckoning call of pools, lakes, and oceans.   In the RV world, summer means we’re piling into our motorhomes, travel  trailers, or 5th wheels and heading for one of the above destinations. Unfortunately, where there is water- there are bugs. Getting eaten alive by mosquitos or other bugs  can certainly ruin a campfire, hike, lake trip, or other enjoyable experiences.  We at Starr’s are going to do our best to help you out with some tips to avoid being bit we have gathered over the years from our own experiences and those of our customers:
  1. Insect repellant works. Spray it not only on your skin but your clothes as well. Check the bottle and make sure you’re buying a brand containing DEET- which is more effective than other formulas
  2. Wear long sleeves and pants and avoid wearing dark colors if possible- mosquitoes are attracted to darker colors.
  3. Avoid strong fragrances such as perfumes, colognes, strong deoterants etc. They too attract mosquitos
  4.  Buy burnable mosquito repellants. We recommend mosquito coils- they burn for several hours.
  5.  Stretch a fan from outside your RV to your seating area. Creating a small breeze can irritate bugs and cause them to move on.
  6. To prevent insects and spiders from entering your RV- use rope calk in the doorway to block their entry. Also- place moth balls in your furnace, water heater, and refrigerator compartments to displace spiders.
If you’ve read this far, hopefully you’ve found a tip that you can use at the campground! Now get out there and enjoy the rest of your summer!
